AS9100 Certified Material: Why It Matters for Aerospace

Written by Dani Weinhandl | June 7, 2024

AS9100 certification means a metal supplier's quality management system has been independently audited against requirements specific to aerospace, above and beyond general manufacturing quality control. For a buyer evaluating a new supplier, that certification is the fastest way to know you won't be the one catching the gaps later.

If you're sourcing metal for aircraft, spacecraft, or defense components, the material itself is only half the equation. Just as important is the system behind it: the documentation and the traceability that determine whether the material holds up under a customer's quality review or a government inquiry years down the line. AS9100 certification lets you verify that system exists before you place the order, not after something goes wrong.

We know the pressure of vetting a new metal service center for an aerospace program. You need proof fast, and you rarely get a second chance if the documentation doesn't hold up.

Aerospace materials, aluminum, titanium, high-strength steel, and select composites earn their place for good reason: a high strength-to-weight ratio and strong resistance to corrosion and fatigue. But the same alloy from two different suppliers can carry very different risk depending on how it was sourced and tracked. AS9100 exists to control that risk.

WHAT DOES AS9100 CERTIFICATION ACTUALLY REQUIRE?

AS9100 is an internationally recognized quality management system standard built on top of ISO 9001, with additional requirements specific to aerospace: configuration management, risk management, first article inspection, and stricter control of purchased product, among others. It's maintained by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), the industry body that develops and updates the standard.

Getting certified isn't a one-time checkbox. It requires an ongoing cycle of third-party auditing and continuous improvement, so a supplier's quality system has to keep performing at that level every year the certification stays active.

Your quality department, your customer's quality department, and, on defense programs, government auditors may all ask to see evidence of that system in action. If a supplier can't produce it, closing the gap becomes your job, not theirs.

WHY DOES AS9100 MATTER MORE THAN ISO 9001 ALONE FOR AEROSPACE PArts?

A Quality Control Manager evaluating a new supplier feels this gap first: The paperwork that comes back with an order either closes the loop or leaves you chasing it. That's the practical difference between "here's your material" and "here's your material, plus the certifications, traceability records, and process documentation your own quality system needs."

ISO 9001 is a strong general-purpose quality standard, and it's the foundation AS9100 builds on. But general manufacturing quality control isn't built around the specific failure modes that matter in aerospace: configuration control on revision-sensitive parts, tighter nonconforming material handling, and documentation that has to survive an audit trail years after the part shipped.

HOW DOES AS9100 REDUCE COUNTERFEIT AND NONCONFORMING MATERIAL RISK?

Counterfeit and mis-certified material is one of the most persistent risks in aerospace supply chains. A Supply Chain Leader approving a new source has to underwrite exactly that risk, and AS9100's requirements around supplier control, incoming inspection, and record retention exist to reduce it.

At Mead Metals, that takes the form of full material traceability, heat and lot documentation, and thorough record retention under our ISO and AS9100 quality management system. Add an emphasis on domestic sourcing and compliance with the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS), and that's one more layer between your program and a nonconforming part making it into an assembly.

WHAT SHOULD YOU ASK AN AS9100-CERTIFIED SUPPLIER BEFORE YOU ORDER?

Certification is the starting point, not the whole conversation. Before you commit a supplier to your approved vendor list, it's worth confirming:

  • Can they provide full heat and lot traceability on the specific material you need as a matter of course, without you having to ask for it separately?

  • Do they support DFARS-compliant, domestically sourced material where your program requires it?

  • Can they handle smaller-quantity orders for R&D, first article, or end-of-life production runs, or do they require volume minimums that don't fit your program?

  • How do they document nonconforming material, and what's their process if an issue is caught after shipment?

  • How fast do they turn around a quote, and does that speed hold up when the order is complex or time-sensitive?

A supplier who answers these clearly, and backs it up with paperwork, is one you can build a repeat relationship with instead of re-qualifying every time.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE AN AS9100 SUPPLIER

Working with an AS9100-certified supplier like Mead Metals offers many benefits for aerospace manufacturers:

  1. Quality Assurance: AS9100 certification ensures the supplier meets the highest quality standards, providing materials that meet or exceed industry requirements.
  2. Regulatory Compliance: Using AS9100-certified materials helps manufacturers comply with strict aerospace regulations, avoiding costly penalties or delays.
  3. Reliability: AS9100-certified suppliers undergo continuous improvement processes, ensuring consistent product quality and performance.
  4. Risk Mitigation: High-quality materials reduce the risk of component failure, enhancing the safety and reliability of aerospace products.
  5. Customer Confidence: Partnering with an AS9100-certified supplier shows a commitment to quality and excellence, building trust and confidence among customers and stakeholders.

Mead Metals ensures these standards are met by following our QMS for both ISO and AS, consistently doing what we say we will do, and providing proof of compliance. This rigorous approach minimizes the risk of counterfeit parts from our inventory, as most of our metal is 100% traceable.

Additional Support for Aerospace Manufacturers

In addition to having AS9100 certification, Mead Metals offers extensive support to aerospace manufacturers:

  1. Emphasis on Domestic Sourcing: We prioritize sourcing materials domestically, ensuring high-quality and reliable supply chains.
  2. DFARS Compliance: Our suppliers comply with the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS), guaranteeing the materials meet defense-related requirements.
  3. Variety of High-Performance Metals: We offer a diverse range of high-performance metals that adhere to aerospace standards.
  4. Record Retention: We maintain thorough records to support traceability and compliance.
  5. Support for R&D and End-of-Life Applications: We provide smaller quantities to support research and development and end-of-life applications, catering to changing production needs.

ORDER AS9100-Certified Metal From Mead Metals

AS9100 certification tells you a supplier's quality system has been vetted. It doesn't tell you how that supplier will handle your specific material, timeline, and documentation needs. Worth a direct conversation before you commit, especially if this is your first order with a new source.

If you're evaluating Mead Metals for the first time, here's what that looks like in practice: a certified quality system, full traceability on the material you receive, and a quote response you can count on, typically within about four hours, so a first order doesn't turn into a weeks-long trust exercise. A metal service center should be able to support that kind of program from day one.
